Halfway Hillside - SOLD

"Halfway Hillside", 8" x 10", Oil on Museum Board
The first time I returned from Eastern Idaho, my daughter and I drove north from Boise to Hells Canyon, one of the amazing places on earth. We got there late in the day and decided to spend the night in the area. When we drove into the little town of Halfway as the sun was setting, I thought I'd arrived in paradise. With the Eagle Cap Wilderness to the north and the dry hills of Eastern Oregon to the south, this ranching and farming community was not just another wide spot in the road--it had an inexplicable impact on me--one of those magnetic places--like something out of Brigadoon. This little painting doesn't do it justice--maybe some time I will be able to go back and spend more time.

Wallowa Mountains

"Wallowa Mountains", 8" x 10", Oil on Museum Board
This is a view of the Wallowa Mountains from Halfway. I wasn't sure if the photo was from the south or from Joseph, Oregon on the north side of the range. When I checked my photos on the computer, it was between the images of Hells Canyon and the photos I took of the cowboys herding cattle down the middle of the highway, so I knew that it was from Halfway.

Wallowas

"Wallowas", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board, 2011

This is an older painting from 2011. I have been taken with the Wallowa Mountains in Northeastern Oregon since we stayed there years ago in a little town called Halfway. We drove into town as the sun was setting. It was so beautiful I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!

If you are fascinated by geology, like me, go to this website:

And for a further dose of geology--read the NPR article on the Grand Canyon. I listened to it yesterday on the radio while painting. According to the author, the Grand Canyon on "...the Colorado Plateau —130,000 square miles — there's really no place on Earth that even approximates what we have right here in the southwestern part of the United States.”

This brought back more memories--in my 20's I backpacked down to the bottom of the Canyon from the South Rim and then west along the Tonto Platform to Hermit Creek. And I've been three times on raft painting trips from Lee's Ferry through the Inner Gorge.

Hells Canyon from Buckhorn

"Hells Canyon from Buckhorn", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

Much of Hell's Canyon in inaccessible by car, but there is a road across the Zumwalt Prairie to the Buckhorn Overlook. This overlook actually is above the Imnaha Valley with the Snake River of Hells Canyon behind a vast set of ridges and valleys.
Zumwalt Prairie and Buckhorn Overlook.

We are planning a horseback painting trip in Hell's Canyon in May, 2018, starting along the Snake River at Oxbow. We met the outfitter when taking a drive up the road from Halfway to Cornucopia, just south of the Wallowa Mountains. This area, with the Wallowa's in Northeastern Oregon just west of the deep canyons of the Snake River and tributaries, is one of the most beautiful and enigmatic places I have ever been. Here is my blog on Halfway in 2010.

Wallowa Cows

"Wallowa Cows", 6 x 10 In, Oil, 2020

The Wallowa Mountain area in Northeastern Oregon is a favorite place, both the north and the south. When we first drove into Halfway, on the south side, just as the sun was going down, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.
