Zangle with Clouds - SOLD

"Zangle with Clouds", 12 x 14, Oil on Museum Board
This was done fast and loose with a big brush--an impression without the angst of re-doing a single part of it.

By the Window - SOLD

"By the Window", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Panel
Another painting I experimented with, scraping and repainting--I was going to keep going but we went up to Mt. Rainier for the day and by the next day, too much of it was beginning to dry. So I left it as is.

Margaret - NFS

"Margaret", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Panel
Sometimes I like to do a painting fast and leave it a little rough because there is the tendency to refine a painting too much, especially a portrait, and the original feeling is lost. I almost went too far with this painting, but slapped my hand before I did too much.

Two Roses - SOLD

"Two Roses", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Panel
Sometimes I purposefully paint fast, leaving off before I over-refine and lose the immediacy of a painting. Other times, I work it again and again, scraping and repainting over two or three days. This was such a painting. I hope I learned something that I remember from the exercise!

Roses in Yellow Pot - SOLD

"Roses in Yellow Pot", 10 x 10 In, Oil on Panel
I know a lot of these last few paintings are similar, but when I'm studying something, that's what happens.

Roses in Green Vase - SOLD

"Roses in Green Vase", 14 x 11 In, Oil on Panel
You can probably tell that I'm not trying to paint perfect roses. What I'm trying to do is interpret the roses in order to work out cool and warm temperatures and darks and lights. There is always something to study with these paintings.

Flowers with Orange - SOLD

"Flowers with Orange", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Panel
I was told by someone I trust that I use too much white, so I am experimenting with more saturated color and using lighter colors to modify rather than using so much white to lighten. I think it will take a lot of experimenting to change this habit, and to find the balance of beautiful cool and warm grays.

White Roses - SOLD

"White Roses", 12 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
When the sun is out, I love to put the vase with the flowers on the back deck and paint quickly before the shadows change too much.

Flowers and Fruit - NFS

"Flowers and Fruit", 16 x 16 In, Oil on Panel
This painting was done at a workshop in June and I like it well enough to put it on the blog, though it is one I will keep as a marker on the journey.

Earl's Pond - SOLD

"Earl's Pond", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
I like to use 4-ply all cotton museum board for outdoor painting trips because it is thin and lightweight. I first learned about using museum board for painting from Bill Reese, my first outdoor painting instructor. I highly recommend Bill's books on painting.
