Lake House

"Lake House", 8 x 10 In, Oil, 2020

I was sure the photo I did this painting from--a photo I took--was taken in Italy. But after extensive searching for the original photo, I found that it was taken much closer to home--in Port Angeles, Washington!

I found this description: "Between 1790 and 1792, several Spanish naval expeditions explored the Strait (of Juan de Fuca). Port Angeles, named for the sheltered bay that Captain Francisco Eliza called Puerto de Nuestra SeƱora de Los Angeles, is one of the few names from Spanish maps to survive in Clallam County." This is on the northern part of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.

Zangle Fall Late Afternoon

"Zangle Fall Late Afternoon", 8 x 10 In, Oil, 2011

Painted years ago looking out from my studio window. The tides and currents on Zangle Cove continuously change, in a rythym related to the gravitational forces of the moon and the sun and the seasons. In the fall and winter, the highest tides are during the day and in the spring and summer the lowest tides are during the day. This is lucky for us, because when the tide is a -4, it is a different universe. In the painting, as you can see, it is close to high tide during late afternoon, which is consistent with the fact that the highest tides during the fall/winter are during the day.

https://faculty.washington.edu/pmacc/LO/tides_background.html

"Why are the two tides in a day different in size? One of the low waters in a day is often much lower than the other in our region. This has an interesting pattern over a year: in summer the lower low water happens in the day, but in the winter it happens at night. The reason has to do with the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to the sun - the same tilt that causes Summer and Winter. The extra tug the tides feel once a day causes the difference in the low waters."

Wenatchee Clouds and Sunlight

"Wenatchee Clouds and Sunlight", 9 x 12 In, Oil, 2021

Thank you to Aimee Erickson for awarding this painting First Place for Plein Air in the Plein Air Washington Artists show currently on view at the American Art Company Gallery in Tacoma, Washington. Congratulations to all the other award winners and all the exhibiters.

I am happy to contribute my award to two local Western Washington environmental organizations: Friends of Burley Lagoon near Gig Harbor and Protect the Peninsula's Future near Port Angeles Both these groups are fighting the installation of industrial aquaculture in their respective waters. You can go to their websites to learn more about the devastation these industrial operations cause in Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. As Plein Air painters--we touch the land and the waters around us with our hearts and our souls.

Chelan Fire Haze

"Chelan Fire Haze", 16 x 20 In, Oil, 2017

In August of 2017 at Lake Chelan the terrible fires in the area created a haze that shrouded the vineyard and hills with a muted and beautiful veil of color. I tried to capture the feeling and visual sensations of the atmosphere and light coming through the fire haze.

Lake Powell Cliffs

"Lake Powell Cliffs", 8 x 10 In, Oil, 2007

A news article yesterday on the possible draining of Lake Powell reminded me of this painting--painted years ago when Lake Powell was still filled with water. Also reminded me of the several times I rafted down the Grand Canyon with other artists, putting in at Lee's Ferry, just south of the Glen Canyon Dam. The article says 'former House Interior Committee Chair Mo Udall as well as five-term Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater have called (building the Glen Canyon Dam) “the biggest mistake in their legislative careers,” killed what was the biological heart of the Colorado River.'

So now there is a movement to drain Lake Powell. The information in the article about habitat restoration and recovery artifacts is truly exciting!

Desert Sage Republic

"Desert Sage Republic". 11 x 14 Oil, 2019

This is an image from my trip to Republic in 2019. Republic is a town in northeastern Washington State surrounded by desert, hills, mountains, lakes and rivers. The area is intersected by the Columbia River about 100 miles north of the Grand Coulee Dam. The Grand Coulee was a mythical name to me as a child--we'd go off in our green Chevy station wagon to camp in eastern Washington. I didn't know anything of the issues of the dams and the displacement of tribal lands and whole towns, of the destruction of salmon spawning in some 1100 miles of river and tributaries.

Blakely Harbor Rocks

"Blakely Harbor Rocks", 8 x 10 In, Oil, 2021

I titled this painting "Blakely Harbor", which is on Bainbridge Island, but my memory is failing me about the specific place, as the view looks coastal. So I guess at least it is about rocks.

Sometimes these sketches seem sort of random. Just a design or an experiment--something that strikes me as interesting in the moment. Harkens back to my "painting a day" period from years ago, although I no longer hold to that.

"Harstine In Mist", 7 x 11, Oil, 2003.

It is both fun and interesting to find old paintings. This image is a slice of the northern view from my studio window--of the southern tip of Harstine Island in South Puget Sound. The island is variously called Harstine, Hartstene and Harstene--and Wikipedia has a lengthy discussion of it.

Dusty Road Utah

"Dusty Road Utah", 6 x 8 In, Oil, 2021

One common suggestion among artists is to use strong value patterns and I often do that. But being the contrarian that I am, I decided to paint a scene with a narrow value range. There is nothing that compares to the desert scenes in Utah. This value structure is enhanced with a light background around the painting, but I am stuck with my dark blog color.
