Zangle Cove - SOLD

"Zangle Cove", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is another view out my window, with Dana Passage at the very left and Zangle Cove on the right. These studies from the back of my house are quickly painted and I'm trying not to give in to the habit of "fixing" them--I'm just leaving them alone.

Dana Passage Stormy Day

"Dana Passage Stormy Day", 10 x 14 In, Oil on Museum Board
I looked out my window to another stormy day--the clouds were racing across the sky. It is interesting to try to capture this differently from the many times I have already painted it. And just to be clear--this painting is not from today. Because of the trips in July and August, I posted ahead. It was beautiful, warm and sunny today!

Up From Winthrop

"Up From Winthrop", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
We painted most of the day on a dead-end road on a hillside above Winthrop. The only issue was that it turned out to be the entrance to a firing range! Guys would come up in their trucks, we would hear shots for about half an hour, and then see them driving back out with silly grins on their faces.

Patterson Lake

"Patterson Lake", 10 x 10 In, Oil on Canvas
The weather in Winthrop alternated between sun and rain, but fortunately, the stormy clouds were passing, so most of the time we could just wait 10 or 15 minutes to let the cloud burst pass.

Dana Passage - SOLD

"Dana Passage", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
The scene out my studio window is ever changing and always a challenge.

Two Apples - Sold

"Two Apples", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
When I want to break away from my usual mode, I sometimes paint fast and just leave it alone.

Methow Valley - SOLD

"Methow Valley", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
This was the first painting on the Plein Air Washington trip to Winthrop in the Methow Valley. Winthrop is north, but also just east of the mountains, so it is much drier than the west side.

Still Life with Roses - SOLD

"Still Life with Roses", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is another painting in the roses series. I keep coming back to this theme.

Stream Study

"Stream Study", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
Painted up the valley from Winthrop in the forest, this was a fast painting and therefore a "study" because a thunder storm was rolling in.

Angoin - Sold

"Angoin", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Canvas
This is a painting of the chalet we stayed at in Burgundy in May. Mainly I was experimenting with painting on a heavy weave canvas, something I've not done for years.

There is a Plein Air Washington event in the San Juan's July 22-28, sponsored by the San Juan Preservation Trust. I will be staying on Lopez Island. If anyone is looking for a place to stay, please contact me!

Zangle Cove

"Zangle Cove", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
Sometimes I like to paint with a big brush without thought, and this is one of those paintings--just big sweeps of the brush and to heck with every plane, color and value. Its odd that on another day I might do a painting and be in a space of thought and emotion one step to the next being moved by all these things. And a third day I might be scraping every 15 minutes. I wonder if anyone else experiences these fluctuations of mood that can make one painting such a different experience from the next.

Touchet Creek

"Touchet Creek", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
This was the first painting I did near Dayton a couple of weeks ago with Plein Air Washington. The skies were off and on stormy and I was on a bridge looking down the creek. I like doing these sketches--fast and simple.

Patit Road - NFS

"Patit Road", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
I painted this in early June near Walla Walla in the southeastern corner of Washington State with Plein Air Painters of Washington and the Washington Pastel Society. It is usually dry and warm in Eastern Washington at this time of year, but it rained on and off the entire weekend.

Sketch Touchet Road

"Sketch Touchet Road", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is definitely a very fast sketch, done in maybe 15 minutes before the rain started. But there is something I like about it and I may do a studio painting from it.
