Roses in the Studio - SOLD

"Roses in the Studio", 16 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
I am still painting almost every day, but because I'm doing a lot of experimenting, some of the paintings are wiped down at the end of the day. Some are wiped down and re-painted multiple times during the day! I was never comfortable with the 6 x 6 inch format of many daily painters and now even less so, partly because I like to use a big brush.

Roses on the Deck - SOLD

"Roses on the Deck", 16 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
I love setting up these still lifes in the sunlight on the back deck. This is not part of the "Red Flowers" series exactly, but it is part of the overall attempt and in this case, the goal was to work fast and loose, then leave it alone.

Red Flowers with Apple - SOLD

"Red Flowers with Apples", 14 x 11 In, Oil on Panel SOLD
A mentor recently suggested doing 10 or 15 paintings of the same subject. I'm not sure if he meant the exact same painting or different versions of the subject. He said basically that with each one you can learn something new and see the previous paintings more clearly for what they are. I've done more than one with this subject, thrown out a couple of them and find that they don't all necessarily get better as I go along. Its definitely an interesting learning tool.

Red Flowers

"Red Flowers", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Panel
This painting was a push to use more saturated colors. I find that going forward in painting is often a matter of dealing with habits--such as habits of the palette and the brush.

Zangle Late Afternoon

"Zangle Late Afternoon", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board
At the end of today I wiped down the painting I was working on, so this is another of my quick "in the moment" sketches of Zangle Cove that I did a few days ago. As you can probably tell, the Cove is an anchor for me--its always there in front of me, not always easy to paint, and always changing.

Yellow Roses - SOLD

"Yellow Roses", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
It may not look like it, but this painting was an experiment--a trend that I hope to continue. Experiments don't always turn out and maybe its not even obvious that they are experiments.  But in doing them, the idea of perfection is cast aside in order to go for something different.  Its all about identifying habits.

Clouds over Harstene

"Clouds over Harstene", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board
I like to do these paintings of the Sound out my back window and back deck. It is a theme that I am drawn to over and over--just recording the moment, the weather, the season and the feeling.

Gray Day

"Gray Day", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
Every scene, whether it is a landscape or a still life or a portrait, has its own feeling and some days I am drawn to one rather than the other. The gray cloudy day on the Cove means more of an effort to see nuance.

Lilacs

"Lilacs", 12 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is another still life painted under the skylight in the studio because of the not so good weather outside.

Harstene Island

"Harstene Island", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board
The weather was changing so fast this day that I did five or six small paintings, a couple of them scraped. With these sketches it is important to me to capture the feeling of weather and light of the moment.

One Pink Rose - SOLD

"One Pink Rose", 14 x 11 In, Oil on Panel SOLD
I love painting roses--this one was in the studio under the skylight because of the weather.

After a Squall - SOLD

"After a Squall", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Panel SOLD
Its easy for me to overdo these types of paintings as the scene changes so quickly, sometimes with subtlety, sometimes dramatically. I just wanted to capture this moment.

Roses with Teapot

"Roses with Teapot", 16 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
I am so loving getting out on the back deck for these still lifes. I have big skylights in my studio, but that doesn't compare to direct sunlight and a warm breeze.
