Hills above Curlew Lake

"Hills above Curlew Lake", 11 x 14 In, Oil on Panel

In June I traveled to Republic, Washington, for one of our Plein Air Washington paint outs. This is a beautiful area, remote from the intensity of the I-5 corridor in Western Washington, with expanses of fields, hills, mountains and beautiful lakes.

Lynwood Center - NFS

"Lynwood Center", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board

I am happy to say that this little painting won First Place in the Winslow Art Center Plein Air Competition this last weekend on Bainbridge Island! My painting buddy, Jeanne Edwards, and I were checking out the shoreline on the south end of the Island and decided we wanted color--so back to this delightfully small business center with its outdoor cafes and old time theater marquee. I am still exploring the wisdom of the palette knife--the impetuous shapes of color with a lot of paint! My sincere thank you to Lois Griffel, the juror of the show, for supporting my journey with the award! Jeanne also did a wonderful painting of the same scene, which immediately sold off the wall at the show! Thank you to Martha Jordan, Director of the Winslow Art Center for this intense experience--we had to submit our daily paintings, framed, by 4 pm on the day of painting! No time to think twice or angst about it. Thank you to Syliva Carlton, Bainbridge Island resident and founder of Plein Air Washington.

I'll have to find this painting and see if it is as dark and scrappy as it seems, because it suits me today. This is another painting from the summer of 2018.

Utah Valley Light

"Utah Valley Light", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board

There are so many places to paint in Utah. Sometimes I don't quite remember the exact location of a painting--especially two years later. But when I discovered this one in a pile of paintings, I liked the atmosphere. Since we usually go to Utah in April or May, this must have been painted from photo and memory

Harts Pass - SOLD

"Harts Pass", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board

In June, on the way to the Plein Air Washington paint-out in Republic, Washington, we drove up the narrow gravel road to Harts Pass in the North Cascades west of Mazama, WA. This is said to be highest maintained road in the State of Washington (6,100ft) above the sea level, and is located in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. When we got back down the Ranger told us we were looking at Tatie Peak. It was chilly with patches of snow, but the most glorious place to paint out the back of the van.

This is from my series of palette knife paintings.

Toward Escalante

"Toward Escalante", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
Every spring I go to Southern Utah to paint out in the desert areas. For someone who grew up in the evergreen forests of the Pacific Northwest at sea level, when I cross the mountains to the eastern side I am ever fascinated by the layers of rock and color, and I especially love the area of the Grand Staircase Escalante. These scrubby pines grow at the higher elevations.

Nisqually Reach

"Nisqually Reach", 12 x 10, Oil on Museum Board

This was painted at the annual Plein Air Washington paint-out at Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in March. The Refuge is a testament to the persevering power of determined environmentalists in Washington State, and I give special thanks to the late Helen Engle, who was instrumental in establishing the Nisqually Refuge along with many other preserves. Thank you, Helen!

Solduc Rapids - SOLD

"Solduc Rapids", 12 x 10, Oil on Museum Board

I painted the Solduc last summer during the Paint the Peninsula event. I love the Olympics. I spent years as a girl backpacking up the rivers--the Hamma Hamma, the Dosewallips, the Elwa, the Quinault. The names alone bring me to a magic place.

"Dock at Ediz Hook", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

I am happy to say that "Dock at Ediz Hook" was accepted in the 2019 American Impressionist Small Work Exhibition in June, 2019.

Painted on a pier on Ediz Hook in Port Angeles, this painting won "Best Architecture" award from Judge Eric Jacobsen in the 2018 Paint the Peninsula competition on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. I painted happily with my friend, Jeanne Edwards, during the competition.

Utah Desert Mountains

"Utah Desert Mountains", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board

I'm hoping to get to Utah again this month! I especially love Escalante. Below is a copy of the map I probably got when I was there because I can't find it online. The scanned version isn't very clear, but it gives you an idea about the "Grand Staircase" -- from the bottom of the Grand Canyon to the Pink Cliffs of Bryce Canyon. I was telling someone the other day about the Vishnu Schist of the Inner Gorge of the Grand Canyon and the power of the rock, and there it is on the map. http://www.grandcanyonnaturalhistory.com/pages_nature/geology/vishnu.html
