Cold on the River - SOLD

"Cold on the River, Port Alberni", 11 x 14 In, Oil on Museum Board
Because of some ongoing issues, I have not been painting at the rate and intensity that I have for so many years. So I thought that rather than not posting at all, I would post some older work. This is a painting of a a town in British Columbia. It was sold years ago at a show on the East Coast where it won a prize.

I want to thank everyone who has followed my blog over the last three years. I have found both friendship and support from you! I wish you all the best for the New Year and that we will all continue to find our way as artists--wherever our paths lead.

Thank you!
Kathryn

Still Life with Roses

"Still Life with Roses", 14 x 11 In, Oil on Museum Board
This still life was painted at our annual Plein Air Washington holiday gathering--such a wonderful group of people!

Red Rose - SOLD

"Red Rose", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Canvas Board"
Do I dare post this? Any notion of perfection has gone. It is raw and not trying to be anything--abstract, realistic--neither. My neighbor told me that it is actually getting lighter now earlier in the evening, though the solstice is not until the 22nd. He also said that the morning would continue to get darker until early January.

Two Red Roses

"Two Red Roses", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Canvas Panel
This is another experiment in abstraction. Doing these I am continually reminded of the George Bernard Shaw quote at the top of my blog!

Rose with Lemons - SOLD

"Rose with Lemons", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Canvas Panel
What can I say--so much imperfection--deliberately leaving it--

Pink Rose - SOLD

"Pink Rose", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Canvas Panel
Thank you everyone for your advice on abstract painting. You can see I'm finding my way slowly. It so good to experiment with throwing any idea of perfection to the winds--very freeing.

Yellow Rose - SOLD

"Yellow Rose", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Canvas Board
This painting goes one step further on my road to abstraction. Its funny how easy it is to revert to the known. To take the leap towards something different--that's not so easy for me.

Apple Sketch 1 - SOLD

"Apple Sketch 1", 7 x 5 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is one of several sketches I did a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes its interesting to see what can happen in 10-15 minutes.

Three Roses - SOLD

"Three Roses", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
I began this painting with the intention of making it abstract than the last painting, but basically went the other way. I appreciate the comments on the last painting about how to become more abstract--I will be trying some new experiments!

Red Cup - SOLD

"Red Cup", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board
As I've mentioned recently, I'm attempting to go more abstract, but it is not easy. I have to make myself stop before the realistic mind comes into play--just leave some things as they are. If anyone has any suggestions about how to approach abstraction, I'd love to hear.

Pink Rose

"Pink Rose", 8 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is a study using a big brush to lay down abstract shapes, more or less. I want to go more abstract, but it requires a new process--and I keep falling back on what I know. So this and some of the paintings to come are somewhere in between and in order to not become too particular, I am leaving them in a rougher stage.

Two Apples

"Two Apples", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
I'm back to studio painting. Because of other concerns right now, my time in the studio has been sporadic and of a different nature than in the past. Its a time of transition for me, yet unclear as to where the transition will lead. The good thing about painting is that sometimes its OK to go with the unknowing.

Canyon de Chelly Sketch 7

"Canyon de Chelly Sketch 7", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board
On the way back from Canyon de Chelly, my husband and I stopped at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon hoping we would find a place to stay, but all rooms were booked. But we waited until 5 pm and were lucky enough to get a cabin nearly on the rim. The sunset and the sunrise over the Canyon were amazing.

Canyon de Chelly Sketch 4

"Canyon de Chelly Sketch 4", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board
The interesting thing about the Canyon is that the land is owned by members of the Navaho Tribe and the areas we got permission to paint on were most often owned by relatives of our guides. There was a beautiful small orchard on this land and behind it the canyon walls.

Canyon de Chelly Sketch 3 - SOLD

"Canyon de Chelly Sketch 3", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
The colors of the Southwest are so different from the colors of the Northwest where I live. It is a challenge to paint these colors and I wonder if I made them a little too intense in compensation for my eye which is use to gray!

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

Canyon de Chelly Sketch 2 - SOLD

"Canyon de Chelly Sketch 2", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Sometimes it was the abstract visual of the canyon walls that was most fascinating to me.

Canyon de Chelly Sketch 1 - SOLD

"Canyon de Chelly Sketch 1", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Because of the health issue I mentioned in an earlier post, I am spreading out my "daily paintings". I have slowed down on my painting activity. The next series of paintings are sketches I did with a group of artists in Canyon de Chelly a couple of weeks ago. We had beautiful weather and our Navaho guides were amazing! You can't just drive into the Canyon--guides are required and special vehicles necessary. Most of the land is still owned by tribal members so it is necessary to get permission to paint on their land. I'm labeling all these paintings "sketches" because that is what my state of mind was and what they really are. Maybe I will do more finished paintings of these in the future.

Red Flowers in Vase - SOLD

"Red Flowers in Vase", 10 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is the last of the flowers paintings done before my trip to Canyon de Chelly. I will do more of these--something about doing them so appeals to me.

White Roses - SOLD

"White Roses", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board
I am still exploring roses--I could probably do this for a long time.

Thursday, October 11, 2012

Today's Roses - SOLD

"Today's Roses", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
Some of these paintings are more about the paint than anything else.

Roses in Orange Cup - SOLD

"Roses in Orange Cup", 8 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is another small painting with big thick brushstrokes--I way I particularly like to paint.

Roses in Glass - SOLD

"Roses in Glass", 12 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is a painting that I did awhile ago and it has a different feeling that the others I have done lately. Its always a journey.

Roses in Blue Cup - SOLD

"Roses in Blue Cup", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
Another rose painting--I'm still trying to go more abstract but there is a major shift that I want to experiment with. It is still in the back of my mind.

PLEASE NOTE: I will be unavailable by email until Saturday Oct 6, so if you write to me and I do not respond, that is why!

"Spencer Cove", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Spencer Cove is on the Northeast side of Lopez. I painted there with several gals from Plein Air Washington.

Watmough Bay - SOLD

"Watmough Bay" 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
This was painted a few weeks ago on site on Lopez Island in the San Juan's. There is something about this bay that reminds me of the Mediterranean--it seems so different from other bays on Lopez--so colorful with clear water.

Lilacs in Yellow Cup - SOLD

"Lilacs in Yellow Cup" 10 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
Different colored brushstrokes--that's what this one is about.

Flowers in Orange Vase - SOLD

"Flowers in Orange Vase", 10 x 10 In, Oil on Canvas
This painting is a little more abstract than usual. More abstract is a good direction to go in, but it will take a little thought and then a mental plunge--something I will be thinking about in the next couple of months.

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Flowers in a Cup - SOLD

"Flowers in a Cup", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
Sometimes paintings are about color, value and brush strokes. What could be more enjoyable?

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Rose Study

"Rose Study", 8 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board

Spencer Spit - NFS

"Spencer Spit", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
The day I painted at Spencer Spit was cold in the shade and hot and bright in the sun. There is a long walkway across the spit to the tree covered hill. Lopez is a wonderful place to paint, partly because there are so many parks and preserves and partly because the people are so friendly. It is the custom on Lopez to wave at every car you pass--something that makes you so much more cognizant of others--it is a happy thing to do.

Thursday, September 6, 2012

Shark Reef SOLD

"Shark Reef", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board
Its about a quarter of a mile hike out to Shark Reef and it is a beautiful spot indeed. When the tide changes, the water moves rapidly in obvious currents. It is fascinating and probably would be dangerous in a boat.

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

Lopez Sky -- SOLD

"Lopez Sky", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
The sky on Lopez takes on a big proportion. You can see so many islands, one behind the other, big and small, and unless you are familiar with it all there is a strange disorientation looking out at the water from different places on Lopez. But the sky covers it all--sometimes with clear skies, sometimes beautiful clouds, sometimes with fog.

Lopez Calm

"Lopez Calm", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Between the tide and the wind, the water on this side of Lopez Island can be rough and fast, but at this moment in the day, there was a beautiful calm.

All of these paintings I did sometime in July and I've posted ahead until the middle of September. During the first part of August I was in Swedish Hospital for four days because of seizures I've been having for a couple of years--mild seizures that only my daughter can see, but that I often had on a daily basis. There is something on the brain MRI that is questionable and I will find out what it is when I talk to the neurosurgeon in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile they put me on anti-seizure meds that relieve the seizures but they make me feel awful! So we're working through that.

I'm telling you all of this because I'm trying to accept the reality--which I don't know fully yet. I only know that the seizures have been real enough to stop me in my tracks--

I've cleaned out my studio of all toxic substances and I would welcome any advice about non-toxic paint materials. I may go to acrylics and/or watercolors--it will be a new adventure.

Thank you to all the people who have supported me on my daily painting blog--you don't know how much I appreciate it. I hope to continue it, but there will be some challenges in the immediate future. Maybe for a while I will post some of my pre-blog paintings--I have been painting for so many years.

I'd love to hear by email from any of you who have faced similar challenges.

Thank you again,
Kathryn

"Fisherman Bay Preserve", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is one of the paintings done on Lopez Island at the San Juan Preservation Trust paintout.

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Grand Canyon - Sold

"Grand Canyon", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
The Grand Canyon always holds a fascination for me. It is one thing to see the breadth of the Canyon from the rim, but another thing to go back in time by traveling through the Canyon on the Colorado.  As you go down from Lee's Ferry, travel on the river is through an uplift, so to the Inner Gorge, the rocks are older and older until you reach the schist that is like black marble in some places.

Sunday, August 26, 2012

Desert Tree

"Desert Tree", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Sometimes I just pick a photo from my travels and see if I can bring back the memory of the place.  The Escalante in Southern Utah is one of those memorable places--we rented a 4-wheel drive because the roads were so rough and the owner gave us a satellite tracking system in case we got lost in this vast remote area--he didn't want to have to find us or his jeep without knowing exactly where we were!

Dana Passage Calm Day - SOLD

"Dana Passage Calm Day", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Some days are calm here on South Sound and this was one of them. Since I generally tend to do brushy paintings, I thought I would try to do this one in a different way.

Utah Backroad

"Utah Backroad", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
Just like the Alaska photos, sometimes I like to pull out the photos from our Utah trip a couple of years ago. I painted every day driving through south central Utah and my favorite areas were the Grand Staircase Escalante and Capitol Reef National Park, both without the tourist buses of Bryce. The Esclante is vast and we rented a jeep from a local guy that had a GPS device with locations of Indian ruins--and the GPS was also in case we got lost! Capitol Reef is an amazing 100 mile long waterpocket fold in the earth running north and south.

Alaska Sky

"Alaska Sky", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board

Zangle Clouds - SOLD

"Zangle Clouds", 11 x 14 In, Oil on Museum Board
I am so fortunate to have such an amazing view out the backside of my house and big picture windows in my studio. Every day and every hour it changes, if not so much the weather or the atmosphere, then the tide and always the light.
