Canyon de Chelly Sketch 7

"Canyon de Chelly Sketch 7", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board
On the way back from Canyon de Chelly, my husband and I stopped at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon hoping we would find a place to stay, but all rooms were booked. But we waited until 5 pm and were lucky enough to get a cabin nearly on the rim. The sunset and the sunrise over the Canyon were amazing.

Canyon de Chelly Sketch 4

"Canyon de Chelly Sketch 4", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board
The interesting thing about the Canyon is that the land is owned by members of the Navaho Tribe and the areas we got permission to paint on were most often owned by relatives of our guides. There was a beautiful small orchard on this land and behind it the canyon walls.

Canyon de Chelly Sketch 3 - SOLD

"Canyon de Chelly Sketch 3", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
The colors of the Southwest are so different from the colors of the Northwest where I live. It is a challenge to paint these colors and I wonder if I made them a little too intense in compensation for my eye which is use to gray!

Canyon de Chelly Sketch 2 - SOLD

"Canyon de Chelly Sketch 2", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Sometimes it was the abstract visual of the canyon walls that was most fascinating to me.

Canyon de Chelly Sketch 1 - SOLD

"Canyon de Chelly Sketch 1", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Because of the health issue I mentioned in an earlier post, I am spreading out my "daily paintings". I have slowed down on my painting activity. The next series of paintings are sketches I did with a group of artists in Canyon de Chelly a couple of weeks ago. We had beautiful weather and our Navaho guides were amazing! You can't just drive into the Canyon--guides are required and special vehicles necessary. Most of the land is still owned by tribal members so it is necessary to get permission to paint on their land. I'm labeling all these paintings "sketches" because that is what my state of mind was and what they really are. Maybe I will do more finished paintings of these in the future.
