Grand Canyon - Sold

"Grand Canyon", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
The Grand Canyon always holds a fascination for me. It is one thing to see the breadth of the Canyon from the rim, but another thing to go back in time by traveling through the Canyon on the Colorado.  As you go down from Lee's Ferry, travel on the river is through an uplift, so to the Inner Gorge, the rocks are older and older until you reach the schist that is like black marble in some places.

Desert Tree

"Desert Tree", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Sometimes I just pick a photo from my travels and see if I can bring back the memory of the place.  The Escalante in Southern Utah is one of those memorable places--we rented a 4-wheel drive because the roads were so rough and the owner gave us a satellite tracking system in case we got lost in this vast remote area--he didn't want to have to find us or his jeep without knowing exactly where we were!

Desert Autumn

"Desert Autumn", 11 x 14 In, Oil on Museum Board
There are so many colors in the desert! It is so different from the colors of a wet area like Western Washington, where I live.

Dana Passage Calm Day - SOLD

"Dana Passage Calm Day", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Some days are calm here on South Sound and this was one of them. Since I generally tend to do brushy paintings, I thought I would try to do this one in a different way.

Utah Backroad

"Utah Backroad", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
Just like the Alaska photos, sometimes I like to pull out the photos from our Utah trip a couple of years ago. I painted every day driving through south central Utah and my favorite areas were the Grand Staircase Escalante and Capitol Reef National Park, both without the tourist buses of Bryce. The Esclante is vast and we rented a jeep from a local guy that had a GPS device with locations of Indian ruins--and the GPS was also in case we got lost! Capitol Reef is an amazing 100 mile long waterpocket fold in the earth running north and south.

Alaska Sky

"Alaska Sky", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
I've been to Alaska twice to paint with my buddy Marybee Kaufman, who lives up near Denali. Sometimes I want to remember the big landscape spaces, so I pull out my photographs.

Zangle Clouds - SOLD

"Zangle Clouds", 11 x 14 In, Oil on Museum Board
I am so fortunate to have such an amazing view out the backside of my house and big picture windows in my studio. Every day and every hour it changes, if not so much the weather or the atmosphere, then the tide and always the light.

Storm over Methow

"Storm over Methow", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
The Methow Valley is an extraordinarily beautiful place, but we did not expect so much rain. The changing skies were a highlight of the experience.

North from Sun Mountain

"North from Sun Mountain", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
There is a beautiful resort in Winthrop called Sun Mountain. Because a dirt road behind the lodge only said "no horses and no pets," my friend Jeanne Edwards and I decided cars were OK. We drove up to the water towers, soon followed by a young resort employee who was very nice and said "this one time."

Touchet Valley Clouds

"Touchet Valley Clouds", 14 x 14 In, Oil on Fredrix Panel
When I was actually there along the Touchet River I did a smaller version of this painting, but the group was on the move and I wanted to go to the new location, so it was a very quick study. This is my interpretation of that study.
