Lake Crescent Fire Haze

"Lake Crescent Fire Haze", 10 x 12 In, Oil, 2018
In 2018, as in most years in the Northwest, there are forest fires in August and September. But this fire near the Olympic National Park was not so bad that we were prevented from getting out and painting. Things are different this year, with the entire state covered with the smoke from California and Oregon fires and the fires of Eastern Washington.

Canyon Tree Utah

"Canyon Tree Utah", 8 x 10 In, Oil, 2020

Still in my studio painting landscapes from Idaho and Utah. We were going to Steheken this next week, but there are two very big fires just east of Lake Chelan. Its been murkey here in Olympia from the fires from Oregon and California.

Selkirks Glacier

"Selkirks Glacier", 10 x 12 In, Oil, 2018

This painting was derived from photos from a trip several years ago into the Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia. The only way to the remote lodge was by helicopter and we were limited to 35 pounds of luggage each so I took few clothes and a small set of paints and my smallest pochade. It was a glorious experience.

Pond at Battle Point Park

"Pond at Battle Point Park", 8 x 10 in, Oil on Museum Board

I painted this a couple of days ago with a group of artists from Plein Air Washington at Battle Point Park on Bainbridge Island. We painted at the pond on the north perimeter of the park. At one point, a bald eagle swept down to this muddy pond and scooped with its claws a very large fish. We have a bald eagle family in the cove here in Olympia, but I've never seen that before, and gives exacting meaning to the term "eagle eyes." I looked it up and discovered that "eagles and other birds of prey can see four to five times farther than the average human can, meaning they have 20/5 or 20/4 vision under ideal viewing conditions."

Chelan Reflections - SOLD

"Chelan Reflections", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board

This painting, like most the last few weeks, is from a photo--a photo of one of my favorite painting areas in Washington State. Glacier formed and over 50 miles long, Lake Chelan was the longest lake in the state even before it was dammed in 1927. Our favorite place is Stehekin--a long ferry ride to the northern end of the Lake--the eastern gateway to the North Cascades. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Chelan

Capitol Reef Sketch

"Capitol Reef Sketch", 5 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board, Unframed

A couple of months ago I started on a new path, and with anything new, there are rough edges. But in part, "rough edges" are part of the plan. The goal is to paint small, abstract palette knife sketches with a "devil may care" reckless finish. This is working well for me, except for that annoyingly petty voice of anxiety that comes along when I actually decide to post one of these works of artistry. I would much rather be painting them than posting them. When painting there is more or less a clear start, middle, finish and go on to the next one.
