Columbia At Donald Bridge

"Columbia At Donald Bridge", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Panel

This weekend was the virtual paint-out of the Columbia River for Plein Air Washington Artists. I traveled from the origin of the Columbia, which is Columbia Lake in British Columbia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_Lake), and headed north along the path of the river without many glimpses of the river itself. The road isn't always next to the river and when it is, there are mostly big trees obscuring the view. Additionally, apparently not many photographers take shots of this road or the river in this remote country and post them to Google.

I also didn't realize how many dams there are on the Columbia River. In some respects, the Columbia is one long lake. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dams_in_the_Columbia_River_watershed).

In the small town of Donald in British Columbia I "stood" on the bridge and painted the Columbia as it heads north.

Hills above Curlew Lake

"Hills above Curlew Lake", 11 x 14 In, Oil on Panel

In June I traveled to Republic, Washington, for one of our Plein Air Washington paint outs. This is a beautiful area, remote from the intensity of the I-5 corridor in Western Washington, with expanses of fields, hills, mountains and beautiful lakes.

I painted this lovely model at the Plein Air Washington holiday paint-in December. Thank you to this group of artist friends for all the painting adventures of 2015! Thank you all!

Girl in White Dress - NFS

"Girl in White Dress", 14 x 11 In, Oil on Canvas Board
I'm still experimenting with the Zorn palette (Cadmium Red Lightt, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black, White). The only zinc white I could find in my studio was so hard I had to throw it away, but I did find some Titanium/Zinc. Curious what you all who use zinc white think about its consistency. Also, my new year's resolution is to get all really bad stuff out of my studio, so I did this painting who no mineral spirirts or turp--definitely a challenge. Ordered some spike lavender painting medium today--hope I got the right stuff.

Yellow Rose - SOLD

"Yellow Rose", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Canvas Board
This painting goes one step further on my road to abstraction. Its funny how easy it is to revert to the known. To take the leap towards something different--that's not so easy for me.

Roses in Glass Vase - SOLD

"Roses in Glass Vase", 18 x 14 In, Oil on Fredrix Panel
You probably notice that I keep doing the same flowers over again. It is practice and experimentation as much as anything, though sometimes it is different moods that have me painting them one way or another. One thing I try to do, is bring in different colors.

Self Portrait

"Self Portrait", 16 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
I have done many self portraits and mostly I toss them. I'd be interested to know how others work with this subject--I always seem to manage to have a lot of anxiety when I approach it.

Turquoise Dress - NFS

"Turquoise Dress", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Panel
So much of painting is not particularly romantic, its more like an obsession--doing it every day whatever the mood of the moment. You notice that I do have certain themes, and painting my daughters is one of them.

Roses - NFS

"Roses", 14 x 14 In, Oil on Panel
It is interesting to try the same painting over again with variation in setup and size. It makes me think about what I did the first time around and how I want to do it this time.

Zangle Cove

"Zangle Cove", 11 x 14 In, Oil on Panel
Every day I look out at the cove and I am often inspired to paint it because it changes every few minutes. I feel lucky to live in this beautiful spot where the rhythms of the earth are so apparent.
