Zangle Fall Late Afternoon

"Zangle Fall Late Afternoon", 8 x 10 In, Oil, 2011

Painted years ago looking out from my studio window. The tides and currents on Zangle Cove continuously change, in a rythym related to the gravitational forces of the moon and the sun and the seasons. In the fall and winter, the highest tides are during the day and in the spring and summer the lowest tides are during the day. This is lucky for us, because when the tide is a -4, it is a different universe. In the painting, as you can see, it is close to high tide during late afternoon, which is consistent with the fact that the highest tides during the fall/winter are during the day.

https://faculty.washington.edu/pmacc/LO/tides_background.html

"Why are the two tides in a day different in size? One of the low waters in a day is often much lower than the other in our region. This has an interesting pattern over a year: in summer the lower low water happens in the day, but in the winter it happens at night. The reason has to do with the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to the sun - the same tilt that causes Summer and Winter. The extra tug the tides feel once a day causes the difference in the low waters."

Zangle Cove Winter - Sold

"Zangle Cove Winter", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

I'm continuing with my palette knife experiments! This is the first painting of Zangle Cove I've done in a long time. But there it is, always in front of me from my studio window. We are still working to protect Zangle Cove from an industrial geoduck farm.

Backyard Trees

"Backyard Trees", 10 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
I painted this during full summer, when the Northwest is the greenest place I know. These apple trees have been here for over 35 years! We lost one last winter--it got too wet and the tree just keeled over. Behind the apple trees are the cedars and the fir on the bank above the Cove. They are significantly taller and when the wind blows, I just have to trust the tree gods.

Zangle Cove Winter Morning - NFS

"Zangle Cove Winter Morning", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board

This is the last of the Zangle Cove paintings that I posted on Facebook for the 5 painting challenge. I hope you all did not mind that I also took the opportunity to highlight the issue of the proposed industrial geoduck farm in Zangle Cove. I honestly wish this were not an issue and that the time I spend writing letters to Thurston County, the Department Ecology, the US Army Corps of Engineers and Governor Inslee about the permit could be spent in my studio. But it is both an important local issue for Zangle Cove and a Puget Sound wide issue. This painting shows the exact location in the Cove where over 43,000 10 inch long, 6 inch wide PVC pipes will go--one per square foot stomped into the tideland when the water is low. Thank you all for listening!

Zangle Sunrise

"Zangle Sunrise", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
This was the 4th painting in the Facebook challenge. Like the portrait series I'm working on now, sometimes I pick a theme and just keep painting. Every painting is a lesson and some of them come together.

Zangle Cove Early Spring - NFS

Zangle Cove Early Spring", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board

Day 3 of the 5 painting challenge on Facebook and another painting of Zangle Cove. This painting from 2004 is of the exact tideland area where the industrial geoduck aquaculture farm will go, in a lower tidal elevation, should it get a permit. You can see the beauty of the tideland where the herons fish and the log where the bald eagles perch. These families have lived here for as long as anyone can remember. It is their home. http://protectzanglecove.org/.

Clouds over Dana Passage - Sold

"Clouds Over Dana Passage", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board, Sold

This is the second painting of the Zangle Cove series that I'm posting on the Facebook challenge. Out past Zangle Cove is Dana Passage, with an occasional ship and sometimes barges on their way to and from the Port of Olympia. Other than barges, there are sailboats, kayakers and canoers from the Boston Harbor Marina. Sometimes the Orcas come through Dana Passage and swim off Boston Harbor. Harstene Island is in the distance. The changing weather is the most dramatic thing about this view--from fog and rain to dramatic skies, such as in the painting.

Zangle Cove Sundown

"Zangle Cove Sundown", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

I was nominated for the 5 paintings in 5 days thing on Facebook, so I'm taking a little side trip there and here and posting a few paintings of Zangle Cove. As I said on FB, we are currently in a battle to protect Zangle Cove from industrial geoduck aquaculture. Protect Zangle Cove. My challenge on FB is to anyone who has paintings that are of or related to your most treasured landscape under environmental threat. So if you want to be nominated, just say that I nominated you!

Zangle Gray Day

"Zangle Gray Day", 6 x 6 In, Oil on Museum Board

The last Zangle Cove painting was done with a palette knife. This very small painting was done with a big round brush. The experiment is the joy of painting.

Zangle Cove

"Zangle Cove", 6 x 6 In, Oil on Museum Board

Since I'm working to protect Zangle Cove from industrial geoduck aquaculture, I've decided to do a series of Zangle Cove paintings!  Its always there, ever changing and beautiful.  And across the way we have a pair of Bald Eagles sitting on their nest.  They often come to this tideland to feed--the site of the proposed geoduck farm.

To learn about industrial geoduck aquaculture, read "This Isn't Your Grandfather's Oyster Farm" at this link:

All proceeds from sales of my Zangle Cove paintings, and I've done many in the past s well, will go towards legal costs of protecting our beautiful cove.

Dana Passage Calm Day - SOLD

"Dana Passage Calm Day", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Some days are calm here on South Sound and this was one of them. Since I generally tend to do brushy paintings, I thought I would try to do this one in a different way.

Zangle Clouds - SOLD

"Zangle Clouds", 11 x 14 In, Oil on Museum Board
I am so fortunate to have such an amazing view out the backside of my house and big picture windows in my studio. Every day and every hour it changes, if not so much the weather or the atmosphere, then the tide and always the light.

Zangle Cove - SOLD

"Zangle Cove", 10 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
This is another view out my window, with Dana Passage at the very left and Zangle Cove on the right. These studies from the back of my house are quickly painted and I'm trying not to give in to the habit of "fixing" them--I'm just leaving them alone.

Dana Passage Stormy Day

"Dana Passage Stormy Day", 10 x 14 In, Oil on Museum Board
I looked out my window to another stormy day--the clouds were racing across the sky. It is interesting to try to capture this differently from the many times I have already painted it. And just to be clear--this painting is not from today. Because of the trips in July and August, I posted ahead. It was beautiful, warm and sunny today!
