Nisqually Reach

"Nisqually Reach", 12 x 10, Oil on Museum Board

This was painted at the annual Plein Air Washington paint-out at Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in March. The Refuge is a testament to the persevering power of determined environmentalists in Washington State, and I give special thanks to the late Helen Engle, who was instrumental in establishing the Nisqually Refuge along with many other preserves. Thank you, Helen!

Solduc Rapids - SOLD

"Solduc Rapids", 12 x 10, Oil on Museum Board

I painted the Solduc last summer during the Paint the Peninsula event. I love the Olympics. I spent years as a girl backpacking up the rivers--the Hamma Hamma, the Dosewallips, the Elwa, the Quinault. The names alone bring me to a magic place.

Dock at Ediz Hook - SOLD

"Dock at Ediz Hook", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

I am happy to say that "Dock at Ediz Hook" was accepted in the 2019 American Impressionist Small Work Exhibition in June, 2019.

Painted on a pier on Ediz Hook in Port Angeles, this painting won "Best Architecture" award from Judge Eric Jacobsen in the 2018 Paint the Peninsula competition on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. I painted happily with my friend, Jeanne Edwards, during the competition.

Mountain Meadow

"Mountain Meadow", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
Mountains with mist or otherwise are ever the place I most want to be painting. This is on the Snake River north of Jackson.

Mist on Mt. Shuksan

"Mist on Mt. Shuksan", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
When the mist rolled in on a very cold late September morning on the ridge of the Artist Point trail between Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan, we thought our painting day was over, because it also started to rain. But it was a "can't dance" moment (when you can't dance and it's too wet to plow, you may as well do something because you can't or don't have the opportunity to do anything else) so we set up our easels anyway. The mist was so thick we could barely see anything but the nearest rocks and lichen. So that is what this painting is about--the amazing color of the steep alpine meadow in fall colors.

Mt. Shuksan Morning Light - SOLD

"Mt. Shuksan Morning Light", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

After a rainy foggy Saturday up at Artist Point at the end of the Mt. Baker Road, Sunday dawned with a brilliant clear sky. It was so bright I thought to myself that it is a heck of a lot easier to paint in the fog, where you don't have to rig contraptions to prevent glare on the canvas and paint with part of your palette in the sun and part in the shade! Definitely need to re-think my system for that!

But the more important point is that standing in this spot watching the sun come up behind Mt. Shuksan, casting the blue and violet shadows on the glaciers, makes it clear why Mt Shuksan is said to be the most photographed mountain in Washington State.

Tilbury Portrait

"Tilbury Portrait", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

At the out-door Tilbury paint out in May 2015, the models dressed in early American costumes. I did a couple of portrait sketches. This was one of them.

Road to Artist Point

"Road to Artist Point", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board, Plein Air

Another painting from the bend in the winding road up to Artist Point. I had painted the two main vistas and I was too tired to pack up and go to another spot. So this was the view!

Girl in Purple Dress

"Girl in Purple Dress", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

It is good to do a series, such as this portrait series. Eventually I come to something of a procedure, and then finding that, can have the notion of doing it very differently. I am still coming to that point--

Woman in Blue

"Woman in Blue", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

Recently at a demo of a well-known artist, I took photos of my fellow artists, who were watching intently. I hope they now do not mind if I publish the paintings that I did of them. The expressions were unique and beautiful

Portrait in High Key

"Portrait in High Key", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

This painting was an experiment in high key. Its a little straight on and I think it looks better in the photo than in actuality, but they are all experiments, right? Sometimes that is all I can ask of myself--to paint and put it in the box and go on to the next one.

Yellow Dress

"Yellow Dress", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

My experiment with a limited palette is over, at least for now. A limited palette is good for a value painting and its interesting to see how far one can go with it. But I'm not sure I want or need to return to the days when all the wonderful colors we have today were not available. This painting uses a full range of color and it was so much more enjoyable to paint and its much more in the direction I want to go.

Man Watching

"Man Watching", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

This is another experiment with limited palette and if I remember correctly, it was blue, orange, black and white. Doing this type of exercise is interesting, but the paintings are more value sketches than color sketches.

Margaret - NFS

"Margaret", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

This is a portrait of my daughter that was an experiment using blue, orange, white and black. I think I should try it again, as this painting was from long ago.

Watching

"Watching", 12 x 10, Oil on Museum Board
I went to a painting demo a couple of weeks ago and towards the end, realized I could do more with my camera than far-away shots of the work in progress--my fellow watchers. When I got home and looked at the photos, the expressions of the "watchers" were often enigmatic. This is Susan.

Girl in Red

"Girl in Red", Oil on Museum Board, 12 x 10

I'm still working on trying to restrict time on these small portraits to one hour, though I think maybe this went went another half hour. When I was done, I couldn't remember when I started! I am still thinking about Leonard Cohen's lyrics: "Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack in everything That's how the light gets in". I'm trying to figure out how to link to the video--if anybody knows how--please let me know!

Man in Dark Coat

"Man in Dark Coat", Oil on Museum Board, 12 x 10

I watched a figure demo recently from a well-known artist who uses, at least in this instance, a very small brush, working on small discrete areas of the figure for long periods of time. I can always learn something from other artists and certain things he said rang true. However, I have to ask myself why I've studied with artists such as William Reese, Jove Wang and Ovanes Berberian. They are not "paint the whole canvas with a tiny brush" kind of guys. But being visually oriented, it is not so easy sometimes to put the visuals in perspective and the influence on the hand from the visual memories in the mind can be a big one.

So in this painting, my goal was to do the opposite in order to reorient myself--to use bigger brushes and do the painting in one hour--not leaving time to go back "fix it up."

Roses with Cup

"Roses with Cup", 12 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board

I haven't painted a still life for months. Its a good thing to do when it starts to rain in the Northwest. But this one didn't go smoothly Three days of scraping the canvas and starting over--and such a small canvas! Its so wonderful when the painting paints itself. But when it doesn't then its better to think of it as process.
