There has been so little sun this summer in the Northwest that when it does come out, I set up the still life on the back deck or my patio. It sometimes seems so bright I can hardly see!

Harstene Island is part of the view from my studio window. This was a beautiful day as the clouds scudded across the sky. I didn't try to make it a perfect painting, just a sketch of my first impression, just as I've done many times before with this view and will do many times again. It is like a studio meditation.

Roses - SOLD

When my daughter and I watched the BBC miniseries of The Impressionists, one thing that struck me was that Monet intentionally picked up paint on his brush and made three strokes, then picked up more paint. Its easy to get into a habit of just stroking on the paint without thought, so in this painting and others that I am working on I am trying to remember to intentionally pick up more paint more often with variation of color.

This paintings is a little rough on the surface because I scraped it so many times to get the colors and the values the way I wanted them. Its not always obvious on the first go around and there are habits to overcome.

Sometimes I stay on a theme because I have a better chance of learning something new when some of the variables stay the same. Painting flowers in sunlight and overcast conditions is a subject that has a never ending interest--there are so many things to study.

I'm still following the theme of flowers and since the weather has finally gotten better, I'm able to set them up on the back deck or the front patio. Much of the exercise is about values and color saturation.
