This was the first painting I did up on Orcas Island for the San Juan Preservation Trust paint-out. It was a cool day and we were hoping that the weather, which has been mostly cool in the Puget Sound Region this summer, would finally turn warm and sunny--which it did later on in the week.

This painting was done on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands of northern Puget Sound for the paint-out sponsored by the Crow Valley Pottery in conjunction with the San Juan Preservation Trust, an organization dedicated to preserving the land on the islands from development. This particular painting was next to a large, beautiful waterfront property that is a member of the Trust.

With another overcast day in the Pacific Northwest, painting the grays, blue grays, green grays of the Sound are a challenge. This was actually a couple of weeks ago.

I enjoyed doing this painting as I just let loose with my big brush, trying to stay with big shapes and variations of color.

Even with a cloudy day, I set the still life up on the back deck. The days this week are hot and sunny, but I've been up in the San Juan Islands and this painting was done a couple of weeks ago before the break in the weather.
