Zangle Sketch

"Zangle Sketch", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
I am forever fascinated by the scene in front of me every day. I sit and watch it change from one moment to the next--from the breeze changing the surface of the water to the changes in color as the sun moves across the sky. Sometimes I just sit and watch.

Roses

"Roses", 14 x 11 In, Oil on Panel
The weather is finally getting better and I've been setting up still lifes on the back deck. It is so renewing to paint with the sun and the wind.

Berber Woman

"Berber Woman", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Panel
When we were in Morocco we spent three days out on the desert east of the Atlas Mountains. One of our excursions was a two mile hike to a small nomadic Berber encampment. We sat in the tent and drank tea with this woman and her daughter--the young girl I painted a portrait of a couple of weeks ago. Our guide spoke a lot about the history of the Berbers, a people that I hadn't known anything about.

Morning Mist - SOLD

"Morning Mist", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
Last week, for maybe the first time this year, there were several beautiful days in the Northwest. On one of them, the mist hung over the Sound early in the morning, and I jumped into my studio to paint this sketch.

Girl in Blue - NFS

"Girl in Blue", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Panel
Sometimes I get into several days of portraits and old photos of my daughters, if my daughters are not here to model, are always motivating for me.

Woman in Gray

"Woman in Gray", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Panel
A portrait is always an experience--how far do you take it? This was little more than the initial laying down of paint and I decided just to leave it, some parts more finished and some parts rough.

Trees on the Cove - SOLD

"Trees on the Cove", 8 x 10 In, Oil on Panel
The problem with Western Washington in the summer is that there is just too much green. So when there is weather, there is something exciting to paint. And when there is weather, everything changes within minutes, so this painting was a fast one, probably not more than 30 minutes.

In the Sun

"In the Sun", 10 x 8, Oil on Museum Board
This is a portrait where I simply tried to capture the feeling of sunlight. It was a fast painting and I wasn't trying to make the likeness perfect--just have fun with the colors.

Woman in White

"Woman in White", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Panel
It now seems like being in Morocco was ages ago, but I'm still painting from some of the photographs I took. A week after we got home, there was a bombing in a cafe in the Marakesh market--a cafe that my husband had wanted to go into for lunch. Interestingly, we never felt any discomfort or fear in Morocco.

Harstene Island

"Harstene Island", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
I'm always trying to find a different focus for my paintings of the Sound back of my house--I've painted Zangle Cove so many times. Harstene Island is actually way off in the distance, so this is a close-up.

Morocco Walls

"Morocco Walls", 9 x 12", Oil on Museum Board
This painting was primarily about experimenting with design. Because it was difficult to photograph the Moroccan women directly, I photographed them mainly using my zoom lens and sometimes simply from the bus. It is surprising what you can get with the camera when it is set to burst mode.

San Diego Alley - NFS

"San Diego Alley", 9 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board NFS
This was the morning painting on the last day of the Stuart Shils workshop. It is interesting trying to get into the mindset of another artist, like in this case, trying to make some areas quieter in relationship to brush strokes and color changes. Of all the paintings I did in the workshop, this is the one Stuart seemed to like the most.

Backstreet San Diego - NFS

"Backstreet San Diego", 9 x 9 In, Oil on Museum Board  NFS
Simplification of composition in Stuart's class was an interesting challenge. When you are out there on the street, trying new things, you never know how it will turn out or what it will lead to. This was a timed painting from the second day of the workshop.

San Diego - NFS

"San Diego", 11 x 14 In, Oil on Museum Board NFS
This is the first painting I did in the Stuart Shils workshop in San Diego over the weekend. Even though he told me it was too complex and I should tackle a smaller area, it is maybe my favorite of all the paintings I did. Stuart is an amazing guy--funny, talented, talkative and ready to share so much. I'm not going to talk about what I learned, because that will take some time to figure out. But what I can say was that for me the three days represented a door. And I didn't expect to be in the middle San Diego by the Rite Aid--the original plan was to be in Balboa Park. But Stuart loved this location and it was both challenging and memorable.

Moroccan Boy

"Moroccan Boy", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Panel
Since I am now posting every other day, I am giving myself more room for experimentation. As opposed to recent portraits, with this one I used a bigger brush and more paint. My goal was to have limited strokes and not go over too much once a stroke was put down. I succeeded partially with this.

Ioana - NFS

"Ioana", 12 x 10, Oil on Panel
This is actually the last painting I did before I went on a trip with my husband to Morocco. But I am away again at a workshop, so now is a good time to post it.
